Georgetown, Malaysia: A Whirlwind of Culture

A Muslim call to prayer reverberates through the morning air beseeching the faithful Malay to do their daily devotions as Chinese men and women deftly scoop noodles with chopsticks in small coffee shops renowned for their amazing array of wondrous dishes. Smells of Indian bread waft through the air beckoning hungry workers. The tropical morning is still wet from the nighttime rains. Located on the lush island of Penang, Georgetown is home to three distinct cultures that intermingle and live side by side in relative harmony. Visitors can enjoy a stroll through the British colonial architecture that dominates downtown, stopping at mosques, Hindu and Buddhist temples, as well as Christian churches. A visit to little India is a treat because it feels like a different country all together. Here, sari-clad women do their shopping amid the sounds of Bollywood music blaring from music shops. The pantheon of Hindu gods is a prominent feature here. Just down the street is the Goddess of Mercy Buddhist temple where large numbers of Chinese worshipers light joss sticks and pray at various locations within as the fragrant smoke billows out of the building. A short walk or trishaw ride from the temple lies Masjid Kapitan Keling, a beautiful mosque surrounded by food stands serving Nasi Kandar and Teh Tarik. When visiting Georgetown, allow yourself to be transported through multiple cultures and times. Where else can you eat samosas and nasi lemak while watching Chinese street opera?
